Temporary University Archivist (Lecturer) —6 months (July-December 2008) with the possibility of extension.
The University of Dayton’s Roesch Library seeks a temporary University Archivist as a leave replacement.
The University of Dayton was founded in 1850 by the Society of Mary (the Marianists, a Roman Catholic teaching order. Responsibilities as University Archivist:
Develops and continually improves familiarity with the university’s history and with its current organization and operation. Administers the university archives and some special collections; is responsible for the acquisition, arrangement, description, reference and access, security and preservation of these materials.
Consults with university offices and organizations on the disposition of their records; collects, as well, the papers and publications of faculty, alumni, and student organizations.
Directs two major digital initiatives, including the supervision of one graduate intern. The first is to reformat and describe archival photographs for the. UD Libraries digital library using CONTENTdm. The second is to manage and expand the UD Archives institutional repository located on the OhioLINK DRC which runs on a dSpace platform.
Supervises the creation of inventories, finding aids, or other appropriate cataloging and indexing for archival and special collection materials (electronic records, multi-media: files and records, publications, photographs, slides, microforms, recordings, audiotapes, videotapes, motion picture films, architectural drawings, realia or memorabilia).
Oversees the preservation and conservation of the materials in the Archives and Special collections (checks, cleans, mends, sends to the in-house preservation unit, duplicates, or reformats, as necessary).
Ensures the security of the resources in the University Archives and Special Collections by implementing the policies and rules for access, use, loan, and reproduction of these materials.
Answers questions for university offices from the records in the archives; performs reference service for administrators, faculty, staff, students, alumni, scholars, and the general public (walk-in patrons, appointment visits, telephone and correspondence queries); assists researchers in handling archival materials; performs research and prepares replies queries received by mail or email.
Communicates university history and promotes use of the University Archives and service; preparing subject guides, indexes, other research aids; publicizing existing holdings and records (e.g., reporting to guides and journals); mounting or assisting in the mounting occasional displays or exhibits (e.g., special class reunions); helping with the preparation of articles or videotapes about the university (e.g., anniversaries, dedications); and makes occasional public presentations. Represents the University Archives on a variety of university and library committees.
Required Qualifications:
Appropriate degree advanced degree, such as an MA. in history or an M.L.S. from an ALA accredited program, with an emphasis on archival management.
Good oral and written communication skills.
Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships with a wide variety of people.
Ability to organize and carry out plans with minimal supervision.
Knowledge of and experience with Microsoft Access, Word and Excel.
Knowledge of and experience with electronic records programs and archival standards. Such as: CONTENTdm, dSpace, PDF-A, Dublin Core, DACS, EAD and XML.
Must be able to lift at least 40 pounds.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience working in an academic archives.
Training in or familiarity with preservation/conservation practices and treatment procedures.
Finalists for the position will be required to make a 15-20 minute oral presentation. The position is a full-time (35 hours), six-month non tenure-track appointment, at the Lecturer level, with the possibility of extension. Excellent benefits.
